Meeting the Need in North America
Family members in dozens of North American cities assist homeless shelters, food kitchens, missions, and other civic organizations by providing food, clothing and other basic necessities to homeless and needy families. Besides ministering to a wide range of people in our own backyard, missions in North America also assist many overseas missions. These overseas workers have been able to make a difference in non-profit projects providing services to the poverty-stricken, including educational and vocational training programs, counseling services, street children, rapid-response disaster relief and much more.
Our volunteers and their children also touch many people’s lives through their benefit performances. Members perform at citizen centers, schools for the underprivileged, emergency housing shelters, battered women’s shelters, and hospitals and prisons, with the goal of providing comfort, cheer and hope.
In mid-1998, the Family Missions was presented with the Freedom Works Congressional Award for our service in assisting homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the Washington, D.C. area. The Freedom Works Award, which is given out once a year, recognizes individuals and groups who take personal and private initiative to assist those in need.
Our volunteer efforts range beyond providing food and clothing to those in need to providing spiritual assistance and support to people from all walks of life. Today’s world is a complex, materialistic one, in which the important values of love and faith are often neglected. Consequently many suffer from loneliness, depression, and stress. Family volunteers meet the need by providing counsel and assistance to people with problems, young and old alike, helping them in their hour of need.
Family communities engage in counseling, as well as organizing and teaching Bible classes, retreats and seminars to varieties of audiences. Making a positive difference in the world by improving the quality of life, even one at a time, is the goal that we work day in and day out to accomplish.
Spiritual words of life are as essential as physical food for our total health, and we consider the care of the soul our most important mission. In order to help achieve this objective, the Family has produced an array of devotional, inspirational, and educational publications, which are distributed to millions worldwide each year in all major world languages, as well as video and DVD productions, and multimedia and music CDs.
